What Does a Session Look Like?

Every Session:

If you’ve never participated in Counselling before, you may be wondering what to expect. Just like going to the Doctor, a receptionist will greet you and seat you in the waiting room. You will then be called into the Counselling Room where I will greet you.

First Session:

During our first session I will be asking lots of questions and taking you through our Service Agreement and Confidentiality forms. This first session will help give me a picture of what you are struggling with. I may be able to offer some suggestions on how to begin the process of working towards a solution or give you something to read related to the issue you are struggling with.  This session will also help the two of us get a sense of how well we will work together. Its important that there is a good fit between Client and Counsellor in order for trust to build.

Subsequent Sessions:

During the second and subsequent sessions we will start by reviewing your week(s) in between sessions. Identify success points and review any homework that may have been assigned. (Yes, there may be homework but unlike school, this homework will not be graded and is intended to support you in-between sessions as you work through the process of change.) We will then discuss current issues you may be struggling with and work towards finding a solution. The session will finish with possibly some homework assignment or some practical therapeutic activities.

Something to Remember:

Counselling sessions are all about the conversation. The more information you are able to communicate, the more I will be able to help. Some people struggle with communicating how they are feeling, I can help you find your voice and take the fear out of facing the struggle. You are not alone and my focus is walking through the struggle with you in the Counselling session.
